これをどこで書いてるかなんて触れる必要ないと思いますが、触れさせてください。これを書いてる場所は、自分にとって特別な場所、京都鴨川沿いにあるスターバックスです。
I know that I don't need to mention where I'm writing this, but I’d like to anyway, since I’m doing this at a very special location for me: a Starbucks by Kamo river in Kyoto.
現在、窓際の席に座って、新緑に包まれた向かい側の土手を眺めてます。地元の住民と思しき人たちが数人、心地よい春の空気の中をのんびり歩いてます。その様子は数十メートル下流の三条大橋をきびきびと歩く大勢の人達とは対照的です。
I'm sitting by the window, looking out at the opposite side of the riverbank, which is full of fresh greenery. There are a few people, probably local residents, strolling leisurely in the comfortable spring air. This is in sharp contrast to the crowd walking briskly on the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge just about one hundred feet downstream.

三条大橋の人たちは多くが観光客でしょう。実際、私も10分前はその一人でした。でも、私はほんとうに観光客と言えるのか？郊外にある知り合いの家を訪ねた後、新幹線に乗るために京都駅に向かうまでここに座って何やら書いてるだけなんですよね。
I guess many people on the bridge are tourists, and I was actually one of them there just ten minutes ago. Well, am I really a tourist right now? I'm not sure. I'm just sitting here writing something after visiting a friend’s place in the suburbs of the city until I leave for Kyoto Station to take the bullet train.
今は新幹線で京都から1時間のところに住んでます。以前は京都の近く、電車で1時間ほどのところに住んでました。そして、ここから歩いて数分の、市内有数の繁華街の一つ、新京極あたりによく通ってました。
I live in a place one hour away from Kyoto by the bullet train, but I used to live near the city, about one hour away by local train. And I would often come to the Shinkyogoku area, one of the city’s busiest areas, which is a several-minute walk from this Starbucks.
その目的はただ一つ、お気に入りの喫茶店や、当時の自宅から京都までの往復の電車の中で英語を読むこと。往復で数時間の英語読書。これを2、３年続けて、その間、実にたくさんの英語の本を読みました。
My sole purpose for that was to read, especially in English, at my favorite cafes and on the trains between my then-place and Kyoto. I would read for several hours on every trip. I continued this routine for two or three years and read tons of books in English during that period.
お気に入りの喫茶店は新京極の北の端にあって、新京極の最も人の多いところにある喫茶店ほど混んでおらず、良い読書環境を提供してくれました。店内の程よい騒音のおかげで読書に集中できたのです。
My favorite cafes were located at the northern edge of the Shinkyogoku area, and were less crowded than the cafes in the busiest part of it. I really liked them as reading environments. The moderately noisy atmosphere there helped me focus on my reading.
それに対して、このスターバックスは新京極から歩いて数分のところにあります。新京極に来たとき、わざわざこのスターバックスまで来ることもありましたが、いつも無駄足でした。そのロケーションの良さから、いつ来ても混雑。最初に書いたように、このスターバックスは鴨川沿いにあって、窓側の席からの鴨川の眺めが良いからです。結局、がっかりして新京極のいつもの喫茶店に戻るのでした。
On the other hand, this Starbucks is located just a few minutes' walk outside the Shinkyogoku area. When I was in the northern part of the area, I would sometimes take the trouble to come to this Starbucks, but it was always in vain. The cafe was always crowded whenever I came because of its good location. As I mentioned earlier, it is located on the riverside and the window seats have a good view of the Kamo riverbank. Disappointed, I would end up turning back to one of my usual cafes in the Shinkyogoku area.
きょう、最初にこのスターバックスにトライしてから約２０年、ようやくこの店に入って席を獲得。しかも窓際の席です。どうしてきょうは混んでなかったのかわかりませんが、いずれにしてもおめでとう＞自分！ 笑
Today, I finally was able to get a seat here about twenty years after my first try. I was even able to get a window seat. I don’t know why the cafe is not crowded today. Anyway, congratulations to me! haha

これは、2023年6月28日の「京都鴨川畔のスターバックス（英文をAIで村上春樹風に翻訳）」の英文と訳文を修正して再投稿したものです。文中に「春」とありますが、オリジナルの英文をスターバックスで書いたのは4月です。
英文はかなり書き直してます。6月28日のは書き流した英文でとりとめがなく内容に重複があったりして冗長になってました（細かい間違いは除く、笑）。今日の英文も同じ内容(と、とりとめのなさ、笑)を維持したままもっと削れそうですが、せっかく書いた英文なので原型を留める修正にしました。
和訳は普通の和訳です。6月28日の訳文は、AIの村上春樹風（かどうかは疑問）の訳文をできるだけ修正しないで投稿してます。

AIの和訳がどんな感じか興味のある方は6月28日の記事へどうぞ。言うまでもありませんが英文は無視してください。悪い英文を読むと、良い英作文を書く妨げとなります。これ、マジです（笑）

英語の本をたくさん読んでたときは精読と多読をやってましたが、何を読むかにも気を配ってました。基本的には興味のあるものを読んでましたが、それに加えて良い英文の模範になるものとして「Scientific American」を読んでました。また、模範としてではないですが、Nature、Time、Newsweek、PC Worldなどの月刊誌、個人のブログなども読んでました。（模範となる英文が読める雑誌とかはネット上にお勧めが出てると思います）。
当時は今のようにネットで何でも読めるというわけでなく、実物を書店で買うしかなかったので、買った1冊は元を取ろうとして記事だけでなく広告も読みました。あと、個人のブログをいろいろ読んで、ネイティブと言えども必ずしも英文が上手に書けるわけではないことがわかって、やぱり定評のある雑誌の、プロの文筆家が書いた英文を読もうと思いました。
英文の良し悪しがわからないうちは、良いとされている英文を読むのが大事だと思います。（英文の良し悪しがある程度わかるようになっても良い英文が書けるわけではありませんけどね、笑）
