トビにちょっかいを出すカラス
Crow Messing with Black Kite
空高く、カラスとトビが少し離れて飛んでます。カラスはトビを追っているように見えますが、トビのほうがカラスよりずっと大きいです。
High in the sky, a crow and a black kite are flying several feet apart. The crow seems to be chasing the black kite, which is much bigger than the crow.
今年3月に鳥さん写真を撮り始めてから、カラスがトビのすぐ近くを飛んでるのを何回か見ました。何か理由があるはずですが、目撃した範囲では、いつもトビを追っかけて楽しんでるようにしか見えませんでした。
I've seen crows flying very close to black kites several times since I started photographing birds this March. There must have been some reasons for the crow's behavior, but in all the scenes I've witnessed, it seemed that the crows were chasing the black kites solely for fun.
トビは猛禽類で、その気になればその鉤爪で簡単にカラスを攻撃できます。でも普通はトビは生きた鳥を襲いません。バードウォッチャーはこのことを知ってますし、カラスも多分知ってるので、トビを怖がらないどころか、ちょっかいを出すんですね。
The black kite is a bird of prey, and it can easily attack crows with its talons if it wants to. But they usually don’t attack live birds. Birdwatchers know this, and the crows probably do too. That’s why crows aren’t afraid of black kites and even mess with them.

ブログタイトルについて
About the Blog Title
今更ですがブログタイトルについて。直訳すると"Extensive Reading and English Writing for Fun”となりますが、Extensive Reading （多読）は取るべきかな、とも思います。というのも、最近はあまり本を読んでないので。現在、月に洋書（英語）を1冊か2冊、和書はほとんどゼロ。
I know it's a bit late, but I'll write about the title of this blog. It literally translates to "Extensive Reading And English Writing For Fun.” Well, maybe I should drop the word “Extensive,” because I haven’t been reading much lately. I now read a book or two in English per month, and almost none in Japanese.
ではなぜ「多読」を付けたか。理由は以前、数年の間に100冊以上の本を読んだからです。ほとんどが英語で、和書を少々。これで「多読」を使う資格があると思いました。
Then why “Extensive Reading?” The reason is that many years ago, over a period of several years, I read over a hundred books, mostly in English and some in Japanese. I think I’m qualified to use the term “extensive reading.”
さらにもう一つ理由が。それは、英語の多読が現在の英文ライティングに役立ってるということ。（出来栄えは聞かないでね、笑）。このことを仄めかす意味で、ブログタイトルに「多読」を入れてます。
There’s one more reason: I want to say that extensive reading in English has helped me develop my current writing skills in the language. (Don’t ask if they’re good, haha). To imply this fact, I include the word “Extensive Reading” in my blog title.

A Tip of Writing in English
文をスムーズに繋ぐのが重要です。語彙や文法、構成よりも大事とさえ思ってます。文の繋がりが悪いと理解の妨げになるし、その先を読む気がしなくなるかもしれません。
The smooth connection of sentences is very important. I think it's even more important than vocabulary, grammar, and structure. If the sentences are poorly connected, it disrupts understanding, and you may even be discouraged from reading further.
文をスムーズに繋げるには？
How to Connect Sentences Smoothly?
超シンプル。文の前半に既知の情報、文の後半に新しい情報をおく。このルールに従えば、次の文をどう始めたらいいか、例えば最初にどんな語を置くかとか、どんな時に文を倒置させるかなど、自ずと決まってくることが多いです。
It's very simple: put known information at the first half of a sentence and new information at the latter half. Using this rule, you can often automatically know how to start the next sentence, such as what word to put at the first half and when to use inverted syntax, etc.
もちろんこれは基本的なルールの一つで、すべての文をこのように繋ぐことができるわけではありません。そんなの無理です。私の場合、このルールがうまく機能するときに使います。
Of course, this is a very basic rule, and it's not that all sentences can be connected this way. It's impossible to do that. I use it when it works well.
このルールは多読を通じて自分で見つけました。以前、インターネット上で同様なことが書かれているのを見たときは、自分は間違ってなかったと思って嬉しかったです。そして2，３か月前、英文ライティングについてのKindle本にも同じことが書かれてました（著者は、はてなブログの人）。なので、繰り返しますが、このルールは正しいです。
I learned this tip through a lot of reading on my own. When I first came across a similar description on the Internet many years ago, I was happy to know that I was right. And a couple of months ago, I found the same thing in a Kindle book about writing in English again. (The author is a blogger on Hatena.) So, I repeat that this rule is right.
