星のない夜。ローカル線の駅に停車している電車。ひとけのない時刻。電車は闇に溶け込んで、明るい窓と赤いテールランプでかろうじてそこにいることがわかる。
A starless night. A train sits all alone at a station in the countryside, which at this hour is deserted. The train blends into the darkness, with only the bright windows and red tail lamps showing it is really there.

何となく惹かれる写真。見ていると、窓際の席に座り、窓枠に肘をのせ、頬杖をついている自分の姿が浮かんでくる。
I'm attracted to this photo for some reason. While looking at it, I can't help imagining I'm sitting in a window seat on the train, resting my elbow on the windowsill, with my chin held up by my palm.
学生の頃、夜行列車でひとり旅をしていたとき、そんな風に座って、ぼんやりと窓の外を眺め、遠くの家や車の明かりがゆっくりと近づき、そして暗闇に消えていくのを何時間も眺めていることがあった。
While in college, I sometimes traveled alone by night train and sat that way, looking aimlessly outside and watching for hours the lights of cars or houses in the distance, first slowly approaching and then receding into the darkness.

夜行列車に乗るのが好きです。正確に言うと、好きでした。というのも、幼稚園のときに引っ越してから高校まで、家族で2，3年おきに夜行列車で帰省していたからです。
I like riding the night train, or to be preicise, liked it because our family took it to visit our hometown every two or three years after we left there when I was in kindergarten all the way through to high school.
そのくらいの歳の子どもや少年にとって、寝台車で夜を過ごすというのは特別なことでした。
For a kid or boy that age, spending the night in a sleeping car was a very special experience.
寝台に横になって目を閉じると、電車の心地よい揺れが感じられ、電車のガタンゴトンという音が聞こえ、突然踏切のカンカンという鐘の音が耳に入ったと思ったら、一瞬で小さくなり聞こえなくなってしまう。そうした揺れや音が子守唄となってぐっすりと眠ることができました。
I lay down in the bed with my eyes closed, feeling the comfortable rocking of the train, hearing the clickety-clack and the occasional sound of railroad crossing bells, which suddenly came into my ears and then quickly faded away. Those motions and sounds lulled me into a deep sleep.
でも大学生の頃は貧乏旅行をよくしてました。普通席しかない夜行列車に乗ることもありましたが、座ったままではどんなに眠くても眠れません。
While in college, however, I often budget-traveled and sometimes took the overnight train, which only consisted of seated cars. I couldn’t fall asleep sitting on a seat no matter how sleepy I was.
眠るのを諦めても、頭がぼんやりして何かをしたい気分にもなれません。だから、窓の外を走り過ぎる夜の景色に目を向けるのですが、見えるものは何もなく、夜空と、たまに家の明かりや車のヘッドライトが目に入るだけなのでした。
I gave up sleeping but I didn't feel like doing anything either because of my foggy head. So I turned my eyes to outside the window, watching the passing night scenery, which had almost nothing to see except the night sky and some house lights and car headlamps.
そんな風に何時間も座っていると、空が明るくなり始め、列車が最初の駅に到着します。
I sat that way for hours until the sky started to get light and the train pulled into my first stop.
疲労感いっぱいで立ち上がり、足を引きずるようにドアに向かいます。でも、そのドアが開いてホームに一歩降り立った瞬間、眠さと疲労感が一瞬で消えてしまうのでした。
I stood up wearily and dragged myself to the carriage door. But the moment it opened and I stepped onto the platform, the sleepiness and grogginess instantly disappeared.
蘇った感じがして、再びエネルギーに満ち溢れた感じがして、心に残ることになる景色や、自分の未来を変えてしまう人に出会うかもしれない、そんな期待が湧いてくるのでした。この瞬間が、夜行列車の旅の一番好きなところでした。
I felt refreshed, full of energy again, expecting to see scenery that would impress me and to meet someone who might change my future. That was the best part of traveling by night train for me.

ブログ開設1周年を記念して（笑）、過去記事からの再投稿です。
日記ブログなら記事の再投稿というのは普通ないと思いますが、ここは英作文練習ブログなので、（少し修正して）再投稿ありということで（笑）。ちなみに、現在こちらに来て頂いている方（のほとんど）にとっては初見の内容だと思います。

最初から1つめの◇◇◇までは大昔に100ワード制限で書いた英文で、それ以降の英文は2年くらい前に書きました。100ワードでは書ききれなかった夜行列車に纒わる音や映像、感情の記憶を記してます。それらは何年経っても色褪せることのない記憶です。
