前回（2023年8月28日）のお話は、近くの川で数か月の間観察したアヒルのカップルの悲しいラブストーリーでした。
The previous piece of writing was the heartbreaking love story of a pair of male-female domestic ducks I observed for several months at a nearby river.
今日はその続きです。メスのアヒルがいなくなり、残されたオスのアヒルが野生のカモの群れに加わった後のお話です。最初に全体的なこと、そして次に忘れられないシーンについて書いていきます。
Today I’m going to write the sequel to this story, of how the bereaved male duck lived after he lost his mate and joined a flock of wild ducks. I’ll summarize his story first, and then write about some unforgettable scenes I witnessed.
オスのアヒルは、写真の日付から計算すると、少なくとも7年間は川にいました。前のお話はその最初の数か月のことで、メスの死後6年以上、川にいたことになります。
The male duck lived for at least seven years at the nearby river based on the dates of pictures I took of him. In my previous story I wrote about the first several months of those years, and he lived more than six years after then.
全体としてオスのアヒルは幸せに生きたと思います。一羽だけになった数か月後、野生のカモの群れに加わりましたが、アヒルは仲間といるのを好む鳥だから、このことで幸せになれたと思います。
On the whole, I believe the male duck lived happily for most of his life. After several months of being alone, he joined a flock of wild ducks, so he should’ve been happy since ducks are gregarious birds.
私もオスのアヒルが他のカモと一緒にいるのを見ると嬉しかったし、たぶんメスと思われるカモとカップルのように一緒にいるのが見れたときは嬉しさ倍増でした。
I, too, was happy to see the male duck with some other ducks, but more so when I found him with another single duck, possibly female, side by side like a pair.
でも、そんなときばかりだったわけではありません。忘れられない悲しい場面も何度か目撃しています。
But there were not always good moments. I witnessed some sad ones I can’t forget.
ある日、オスのアヒルが三羽の野生のカモと一緒に泳いでいました。良かった、と思った次の瞬間、その三羽のカモは飛び上がり、オスのアヒルを残して飛んで行ってしまいました。
One day I spotted him swimming with three wild ducks. Good, I thought, but then suddenly the wild ducks took off and flew away, leaving him alone.
オスのアヒルは飛べないので後についていくことができません。オスのアヒルさん、可哀想。そう思いながら、三羽のカモが小さくなって空に消えていくのをじっと見つめていました。オスのアヒルも同じように、飛び去って行く三羽のカモを悲しい気持ちで見ていたと思います。
He couldn’t fly and follow them. What a pity! I felt very sorry for him, and stared at the three ducks getting smaller and disappearing into the sky. He must’ve done the same as me, watched with great sadness.
もうひとつ忘れられないのは、ちょうど三羽の野生のカモが飛び去った後に起こったかのような出来事です。オスのアヒルが、川の上流に向かって急いで移動しているのを目撃したのです。
Another unforgettable episode was just like what happened right after the scene above. I saw the male duck hurrying upstream.
行き先は野生のカモが集まる川岸です。オスのアヒルは、他のカモたちと一緒にいたくて、浅瀬や水上を一心不乱に急いでいたのだと思います。
His destination was a spot along the riverbank where wild ducks gather. He must’ve wanted to be around them so badly that he frantically ran in shallow water and swam on its surface.
そんなオスのアヒルの後を川の土手道沿いについていきました。その移動速度の速いこと！ 2キロ近くの距離をわずか30分で移動しました。このことから、ペットの犬や猫と同じように、野生に暮らす鳥も強い意志を持っていると思いました。
I followed him walking along the riverside path, being surprised at how fast he could move. He took only 30 minutes to rush more than a mile, which convinced me that wild birds also have a strong will, just as pet cats and dogs do.
オスのアヒルさん（と私）は、野生のカモのお気に入りの場所に到着しました。でも、他のカモの姿はありません。あたりを見回しても誰もいない。一人残された飛べない鳥の孤独をひしひしと感じました。
He (and I) reached the wild duck’s favorite spot, but only to find no ducks in sight. He just stood looking around in vain for them, which brought home to me the flightless bird's loneliness of being left behind.
こんな風に辛い場面もありましたが、最初に書いたように、オスのアヒルさんの鳥生はそんなに悪くなかったと思います。いくつか目にした嬉しいシーンのうちベストなのは、メス（たぶん）の野生のカモと一緒に、まるでおしどり夫婦のようにシンクロしながら羽繕いをしている場面でした。
Like these moments, he sometimes had hard experiences, but as I said earlier, his life shouldn’t have been so bad. One of the best scenes I witnessed was where he and one wild duck, possibly female, were preening together like lovebirds with synchronized motions.
オスのアヒルさん、野生のカモさんたちに囲まれて、静かに穏やに、その鳥生の最後を迎えることができましたように。
I hope his life ended peacefully surrounded by some wild ducks.
