アヒルの恋 - 多読と趣味の英文ライティング

もう何年も前のことですが、近所の川沿いを散歩するのが日課になっていて、水鳥が羽繕いや餌取り、あるいはただ水面に浮かんでたりするのを眺めたり写真を撮ったりするが好きでした。

Many years ago, strolling along the riverside was part of my daily routine, and I loved watching and capturing water birds preening, feeding, or just floating on the water.

ある日、川沿いを歩いてると、ぽっちゃりした白い鳥が、他のカモさんたちから離れてポツンと一羽でいます。それはメスのアヒルでした。数日後、今度はオスのアヒルと一緒にいるのを目撃。オスのアヒルはカラフルな羽をしています。二羽はいっしょに川の向こう岸へ向かってるところでした。

One day when I was walking along the riverside, I noticed a plump white bird alone, and away from the other wild ducks. It turned out to be a female domestic duck. Several days later I saw it again, this time with a male domestic duck who had colorful feathers. They were swimming together across the river.

それ以後、この二羽が並んで泳いでたり、餌を取ってたり、羽繕いをしてたり、ただ眠ってるだけのところをよく目にしました。そして、メスのアヒルがオスのアヒルに夢中なことがわかりました。

Since then, I often watched them swimming, feeding, preening, or just sleeping side by side, and discovered that the female duck had a crush on the male duck.

メスのアヒルは、ほかの鳥がオスのアヒルに近づくとその鳥を追い払ったり、オスのアヒルから離れ過ぎてるのに気がつくと、長いこと会ってなかったかのようにオスのところに駆け寄ります。

When other birds came close to the male duck, the female chased them off. When she found herself far away from him, she rushed back to him as if she hadn’t seen him for a long time.

幸い、オスのアヒルもそんなメスを受け入れているようで、この二羽のアヒルができるだけ長く一緒に過ごせますようにと願いました。

Fortunately, the male seemed to accept her as his mate. I hoped they would live together for as long as possible.

でも、その願いはメスのアヒルがいなくなったことで終わってしまいます。ある日の散歩中のこと、メスのアヒルが水際に具合悪そうに座っています。傍らにオスのアヒル。すぐ良くなりますようにと願いましたが、それがメスのアヒルを見た最後でした。

But that hope ended when the female duck disappeared. One day on my walk I saw her very sick sitting at the water’s edge, the male beside her. I hoped she would get better soon. But it was the last I saw of her.

そして、残されたオスのアヒルの悲しいお話は続くのです。それは人の視点からかもしれませんが、動物のニュースには、相棒を失った残されたほうの動物が、元気がなくなり、すぐに死んでしまったという話もあります。動物にもそういう感情はあると思ってます。

So the sad story of the bereaved male duck continued. Maybe it's from a human perspective. But I know of some news articles about animals who lost energy and eventually died not long after their mate was gone. I believe animals have such emotions too.

オスのアヒルはメスがいなくなった後、二羽でいつも一緒にいた水際に、よく一羽で佇んでました。それはまるで、メスが再び現れるを待ってるかのようでした。

After he lost his mate, I often saw the male duck sitting alone where he had always been with her, as if waiting for her to reappear.

数か月後、オスのアヒルは野生のカモの群れに加わったようです。でも、ときどき水際で、何かを思い出してるかのように一羽で立っていることがありました。それを見ながら思いました、オスのアヒルさん、メスのアヒルさんのことや二羽で過ごした楽しかった日々のことを今でもまだ覚えてるかな、と。

A few more months later, the male duck seemed to have joined a flock of wild ducks, but still sometimes stood alone at the water’s edge, as if reminiscing something. I then wondered if he still remembered the female duck and the happy days he spent with her.
