たくさんのユリカモメが割れた貝殻や海草が打ち上げられた水際で餌を取っています。その上をゆっくり飛びながら着地場所を探す1羽のユリカモメ。
Many black-headed gulls are feeding at the water's edge on the beach, where there are lots of broken seashells and seaweed that have washed ashore. One gull is slowly flying low over the others, looking for a place to land.
この写真を撮ったのは水鳥を撮り始めた何年も前の冬のことです。写真には写ってませんが、海草を食べているのもいました。ユリカモメが海草を食べるのは知りませんでした。
I took this picture many winters ago, around the time I started photographing waterbirds. Although not captured in this photo, several black-headed gulls were eating seaweed, a behavior I hadn't been aware of.
鳥写真を撮っているとき、たまに新しい発見があって中には驚くものもあります。そのひとつが水面にダイビングして餌を取るユリカモメ。ダイビングして魚を取る海鳥はテレビで見たことがありますが、カモメが同じことをするとは知りませんでした。下の写真はユリカモメのその瞬間です。
While photographing birds, I occasionally made new discoveries, some of which even surprised me. One such discovery was a black-headed gull diving into the water to catch a prey. I had seen this behavior in some seabirds on a TV program, but I didn't know gulls did the same. In the picture below, I captured the moment a black-headed gull was about to dive.
鳥写真を撮り始めてから水鳥やその行動についてたくさん知ることができましたが、それらは自分の経験によるもので、本やテレビ、映画から得たものではありません。
I've learned a lot about waterbirds and their behaviors since I started photographing them. These facts came from my firsthand experiences, not just from reading books or watching TV or movies.
そこには世間にとって新しい発見はひとつもなくて、すべてインターネットや本で知ることができるものばかりです。でも、自分の足を運んで得たそれらの知識はただの情報ではなく、自分自身の経験そのものです。
None of these facts are new to the world. They are all known facts that you can find on the internet or in books. However, the knowledge I gained in the field is not just information, but my very own personal experiences.
