今日も1日中雨だった。少し暗い気分でいつもの時間に家を出て会社に向かう。
It rained all day today again. Feeling a bit gloomy, I left my house for work at the usual time in the morning.
でも、雨の中、街路樹のある通りを歩いていると、そんな気分を変えてくれることが起こる。お気に入りの小鳥、ハクセキレイに会えた、それも間近で。
In the rain, I was walking along a tree-lined street when something happened that changed my mood: I saw a Japanese wagtail, one of my favorite birds, up close.
傘を深めにさしていたら、その左の端から小さな鳥が視界に入ってきた。
I was holding my umbrella down over my head when a little bird came into view from the left edge of the umbrella.
2メートルほど離れた濡れた舗装路面で何かをついばんでいる。最初はすずめかと思った。というのも、そんな距離まで人に近づく小鳥はスズメのほかにほとんどいないから。
It was pecking at something on the wet paved ground about six feet away from me. At first I thought it was a sparrow because few birds other than sparrows come that close to people.
でも、すぐにそれがハクセキレイだとわかって、自分の好きな小鳥に会えるとは思ってなかったので、暗い気持ちが吹っ飛んで、今日はいい1日になると思えた。なんて単純！（笑）
I soon realized, however, it was a Japanese wagtail, a bird I love. The unexpected encounter with the bird drove away my gloomy mood, and even made me feel sure that it was going to be a great day. How simple minded I was! (haha)
