ほとんど誰も興味ないと思いますが、きょうはショベルカーについて書こうと思います。というのも先日、工事現場でショベルカーが面白いことをしてるのを目撃したからです。これはひょっとしたらショベルカーに関するトリビアかもしれません。
I think almost no one is interested in excavators, but I'm gonna write about them today because I witnessed an excavator doing something interesting at a construction site the other day. This might be a trivia about excavators.
ショベルカーは路上を走れません。たぶんその重量とキャタピラが道路を傷めるからだと思います。なのでトレーラーやトラックで現場まで運ばれます。ショベルカーがそんな風に運ばれているのを見たことがあるし、トレーラーの荷台と地面の間に渡された板を渡ってトレーラーの荷台に乗るのを見たこともあります。
Excavators aren't allowed to drive on roads, probably because their weight and tracks may damage the road, so they're carried by a trailer or truck to the site where they're gonna be used. I've seen them being carried that way more than once, and I've also seen them climbing onto the deck of a trailer by crossing the plates placed between the deck and the ground.
でも、先日見た小型のショベルカーは板を使わずに自力でトラックの荷台に乗ってました。どうやったらそんな事が可能なのか。自分のアーム（ブーム）を使ったのでした。では、どんな風に。
However, a few days ago, I saw a small excavator move onto the deck of a truck by itself, without using any plates. How can this be possible? It used its boom. But how?
まずショベルカーの前部をトラックの荷台の真後ろに付けます。次にショベル（バケット）をトラックの荷台の上に乗せます。そして、ショベルで荷台を押してショベルカーの前部を持ち上げます。この時点で、ショベルカーの後部は地面上、ショベルはトラックの荷台の上、ショベルカーの前部は宙に浮いた状態です。（図1）
First, it positioned itself right behind the truck with its front end facing the truck’s rear, then put its bucket onto the deck of the truck, and then pushed against the deck with its bucket to lift up the front end of its body. At this point, the rear of the excavator was on the ground, its bucket was on the truck's deck, and its front end was in the air. (Picture 1)
次に、ショベルカーのキャタピラがトラックの荷台にかかるまでショベルカーを動かします。続いて、アームを後ろに回してショベルを地面に付けます。そして、ショベルで地面を押してショベルカーの後部がトラックの荷台と同じ高さになるまで押し上げます。（図2）
Then it moved forward until its tracks reached the edge of the truck's deck. It then swung its boom to its rear, put its bucket on the ground, and pushed against the ground with its bucket to lift its rear to the level of the truck's deck. (Picture 2)
最後に、ショベルカー全体がトラックの荷台に乗るまでショベルカーを動かします。これで完了！ 最初から最後まで見ていて感動しました。
Finally, it moved forward until its entire body was on the truck's deck. Mission accomplished! I was impressed to watch the entire process.
ちなみに、大型のショベルカーでも同じことができるかBing (MicrosoftのAI）に尋ねました。答えは、できる、でした。大型か小型かに関わらず、ショベルカーはそのアームでショベルカー自体を動かすことができ、そのアームを使ってトレーラーやトラックの荷台に乗ることができるそうです。また、これには腕の良いオペレーターや慎重な作業が必要とのこと。
I was curious if only small excavators could do this, so I asked Bing, Microsoft's AI, if large excavators could do the same. The AI answered they can. It said that excavators have booms that can move themselves, and can climb onto the deck of a trailer or truck using their booms, regardless of their size. It also said that such an operation requires a skilled operator and careful maneuvering.
これ、ショベルカーのトリビアとみなされますように（笑）。それとも、もう一般的に知られてるのかな？
I hope this is considered trivia about excavators (haha). Or, do many people already know this?
